Some Common Open Source Alternatives
One of the hardest parts of making the switch from “standard” proprietary software to open source alternatives is finding the right replacement. In some cases, the proprietary solution has become so common place that people do not realize they have other options. For instance, it is the belief of many that Microsoft Word is the only way to type papers, and that the .doc or .docx are the only file formats that can be used to store them. This is simply not true. There are plenty of open source alternatives available, and the first [...]
The Best Way to Learn Ruby on Rails by a PHP Developer
One of the things I like best about working at Buckeye Interactive (BI) is the community of learning that is fostered here. We are always experimenting, tinkering, breaking, and building with the latest technologies, tools, and widgets we can find. Currently, all of the web solutions we provide for clients use PHP as the underlying language. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about the Ruby language and more importantly Ruby on Rails (RoR). I have been contemplating making the switch on my personal projects and if you’re wondering how [...]
Ohio Get Your Business Online by Google
This afternoon, Jessica and I are attending a series of 3 workshops at the Columbus Convention Center that were brought here by Google. They call the program “Ohio Get Your Business Online” (ohiogetonline.com), and they’re running these events all over the country with similar names. I will fill in more details as we go. Get Your Free Website 1:34pm: Marum, an Intuit business advisor, just started his presentation. This is the first official indication that Intuit is involved in the event. I did my research ahead of time, so I [...]
Facebook Mixes It Up Again!
Facebook’s new changes have left many users upset and confused. The cartoon correctly describes how so many people deal with change (and not just technology changes). But, when it comes to Facebook, it’s something we’ve been through before and will indefinitely happen again. If you’ve been living under a rock the past week, here are some of the new changes (some that have launched and some that will be launching soon): You’re going to get a Timeline — a scrapbook of your life: This is a stream of information about you — the [...]
New Albany Leaders Hail Big Year of Development
Great article by Brett Nuckles from Columbus Local News with quote from Buckeye President, Brad Griffith. Business owners and community leaders gathered last week to recap a year of positive development in New Albany. A variety of speakers talked about the city’s success as a hub for commercial development during the annual New Albany Chamber of Commerce Community Update Breakfast Sept. 15. The topic of the morning was “synergy,” and speakers discussed how the joint efforts of the local government, business leaders and other influential residents led to positive outcomes in the past year. [...]
Meet the Bloggers of Buckeye Interactive: Sarah Davis
What is your position with Buckeye Interactive? Interactive Marketing Coordinator What has been the most challenging aspect of your position at Buckeye Interactive thus far? Adjusting to working full-time. I served 4 years in college and only worked nights, so it was a big adjustment starting my day at 8:30am. Name your favorite in-office moment. I’d say anytime Noelle (our owner Brad’s daughter) gets to visit. She is full of laughter and fun. It’s been so great having the opportunity to watch her grow! If you could change jobs outside [...]
Tweeting, Checking In, and Texting to Win
While I’m not a huge proponent of foursquare on the level of personal use (I can’t honestly say I think people care about me filling up my gas, or going to the grocery store, or flying to Topeka, Kansas), I am intrigued by the idea that you can check in at an event via your phone. Foursqare’s application in this sense allows users to check-in upon arrival and sometimes digitally receive cool stuff- like free drinks at a bar or a free appetizer.I’m not sold quite yet on this fad [...]
BuckeyeInteractive.com Redesign
Since I started working officially full time here at Buckeye Interactive in late June one of the first projects I was given was to redesign our homepage at BuckeyeInteractive.com. While trying to juggle this redesign with that vast list of client projects in the lineup we are finally nearing completion! This new website will include a much fresher look with some very incredible dynamic features brought to life with the help of Rian our combat developer. Some of the new features we are incorporating will include an updated portfolio section, [...]
Meet the bloggers of Buckeye Interactive: PAUL TELA
What is your position with Buckeye Interactive? I am a Web Developer who primarily works with server side technologies such as PHP and MySQL. What has been the most challenging aspect of your position at Buckeye Interactive thus far? Learning new technologies. Many of the projects I have worked on have required me to learn a technology or computer language I never thought I would have needed to know. Oddly enough, this has also been my favorite part of working here. Name your favorite in-office moment. I’d have to say [...]
New Furniture
It’s official. Buckeye Interactive is now a company. It wasn’t the legal work or employees that made it official but the new desks! We bought our own furniture last week and quickly got it assembled and set up shop in our new office space. We’re still in the same building but just down the hall. With the company doubling since I joined, we quickly outgrew our old office and it’s furnishings. While it was fun to scrounge together all our previous furniture from wherever we could find it, it was just as much fun [...]
